Washington D.C., October 21, 2025 — In a vivid demonstration of cultural diplomacy, President Donald Trump welcomed the Indian-American community into the Oval Office today to mark the festival of Diwali, underscoring the deepening ties between the United States and India.

Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra of India to the U.S. described himself as “deeply honoured” to participate in the celebration at the White House. On behalf of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he extended warm Diwali greetings to the Indian-American diaspora and to the people of India.

In his remarks, President Trump praised Modi as “a great person” and “a great friend,” highlighting bilateral cooperation on trade and regional stability. He pointed specifically to progress in U.S.–India–Pakistan relations, remarking that “we have no war with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing.”

Turning to the festival’s spiritual symbolism, the President said:

“In a few moments we’ll light the diya as a symbol of faith in the victory of light over darkness… knowledge over ignorance and good over evil.”

Shortly thereafter, President Trump performed the ceremonial lighting of diyas in the Oval Office, joined by senior Administration officials, representatives of the Indian-American business community, and Ambassador Kwatra.

The gathering reflects the growing cultural significance of Diwali in American society and the prominence of the approximately ‘5-million-strong’ Indian diaspora in the U.S., which Ambassador Kwatra invoked in his comments.

As the festival marks a time of renewal, hope and community, today’s White House event underscored the importance both countries place on shared values, mutual respect and international partnership.
