An Indian software developer was among five individuals welcomed to “the great American family of citizens” by U.S. President Donald Trump in an unusual White House ceremony, which was broadcast on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020, during the Republican National Convention.
The purpose of the event was to highlight the President’s support for immigrants coming into the country legally.
After she was sworn-in as a citizen, Sundari Narayanan, wearing a bright pink, gold-bordered sari, was introduced by President Trump as “a talented software developer”, who is a “phenomenal success”.
Hailing from India, Bolivia, Lebanon, Ghana and Sudan, with the latter wearing a hijab, the new citizens reflected America’s ever-changing population: mostly multicultural, non-Caucasian and of different faiths.
Trump noted that Narayanan had been in the U.S. for over a decade, and had “two beautiful, wonderful children,” with her husband. The President then asked, “They are the apple of your life, right?” to which Narayanan replied in the affirmative.
Reading the naturalization oath to the group was Acting United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf.
