The non-profit organization, The Desai Foundation, hosted their 9th annual Diwali On The Hudson fundraising event at HK Hall in New York City October 12, 2022.
According to organizers, the event “brought together the who’s who of New York’s South Asian influencer scene.”
The goal of the 25 year-old Foundation is to “empower women and children through community programs that focus on health, livelihood, and menstrual equity.” They are currently operating in 2,500 villages, and have a reach of nearly 5 million people, the press release said. The Diwali on Hudson event raised more than $150,000, which, according to Desai Foundation President Megha Desai, was above the goal set for the event.
More than 300 guests attended, including Captain Kirk Douglas (The Roots), comedian Zarna Garg, actresses Melanie Chandra and Ami Sheth, model Diva Dhavan, Grammy winner Falu Shah, Parag Mehta (JPM), Chef Palak Patel, political activist Suraj Patel, actress and author Sheetal Sheth, the press release said.
“We have garnered such incredible support from our friends, and donors and have had the opportunity to showcase so many incredible artists all while raising money for the people we serve in rural communities,” Megha Desai is quoted saying in the press release.
Singer, and songwriter Rhea Raj performed her viral hit song “Outside” while DJ Suhel entertained the crowd all evening.
Board Member Sindhya Valloppillil Kalghatgi and Leadership Council Member and major donor Karam Hinduja helped the organization reach their fundraising goal. Executive Director Mittal Gohil dwelt on the work done by the Foundation by sharing stories from the field work.
