On November 13, 2024, BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and multiple partner organizations, jointly hosted Diwali celebrations on Capitol Hill.
Partner organizations included the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), U.S. Indian Community Foundation, Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA), The Art of Living Foundation, Federation of Jain Associations of North America (JAINA), Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur, Sikhs of America, Asia Pacific Institute of the American Jewish Committee, Indian American Relations Council, and National India HUB, a press release from BAPS said.

More than 300 Indian Americans from across the United States were joined by some 33 members of Congress in the celebration at the Dirksen Senate Office Building. Also present was Indian Ambassador to the United States Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and Alia Al Suwaidi, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates.
Diwali, which symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance is aimed at fostering a sense of togetherness and gratitude, showcasing the rich cultural diversity and cherished traditions celebrated by millions globally, BAPS and HAF noted in their press releases.
At the event, elected officials shared reflections on how cultural celebrations like Diwali build understanding, strengthen community bonds, and bridge connections across diverse groups.
“The last few years, I visited Robbinsville, New Jersey, to the temple (BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham) three times. Each time, it’s clear that the service here reaches beyond religion to reflect a faith in the power of community. Diwali embodies that faith and its importance in our lives,” Congressman Pete Sessions, R-Texas, is quoted saying in the press release.
Ambassador Kwatra expressed appreciation for the occasion, saying, “It is wonderful to celebrate Diwali with so many Members of Congress and distinguished guests tonight. It is a reflection of their commitment to the relationship. Your presence here is a reflection of the important role that you and this festival play in the relationship. This is an Indian festival that is embraced and celebrated all over the world. And you, your presence here, the presence of so many Members of Congress, has made it even more special.”
Some of the other speakers included Congressman Jonathan Jackson, D-Illinois; Congresswoman Haley Stevens, D-Michigan, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, echoed the praise for holding the event on Capitol Hill, and for their outreach.
Attendees engaged in discussions with Members of Congress on various issues of concern during the event.
