The Consulate General of India, Chicago celebrated the 74th Independence Day of India on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2020.
The program was broadcast live on the Consulate’s Facebook page. Around 1,600 people joined these celebrations virtually, according to a press release from the Consulate.
The official Flag hoisting ceremony was held at the Consulate premises with participation of the Indian-American community and friends of India joining in the virtual celebrations because of COVID-19 regulations ensuring safety for all.
A few Indian community organizations also enabled viewing of the Consulate’s live-streaming on its Facebook page, the press release added.
Consul General Amit Kumar hoisted the Indian national flag which was followed by singing of national anthem of India.
He then read out the address of the President of India as is the tradition at all consulates of India around the world.
A cultural program followed, conducted in a virtual format. It included singing of patriotic songs by the children of Bal Gokulam, a dance performance by students of Natya Dance Theater, and a medley of patriotic songs composed by Mandala Arts, a press release from the Chicago consulate said.
The Consulate received messages of felicitations from various dignitaries and friends of India, including from Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Illinois.
